Twitter Grabs International Attention with Iran Protest
By twilight • Jun 18th, 2009 • Category: Lead StoryJust when the Twitter hype started to settle and the phase came close to an end, Iran had an election that brought the social networking service in stardom once again. As protest continue in the capital of Iran over a controversial election, twitter seems to be the main source of communication to the outside world of what is happening in the aftermath of their election of a new leader.
Even Washington is joining in one the social networks communication capabilities by urging Twitter to be available for the use of Iranian protesters. State officials even told Twitter to hold off on scheduled maintenance to be readily available for what happens next in Iran.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said “I wouldn’t know a Twitter from a tweeter, but apparently, it is very important”. She believes that it is important to keep the communication available and ongoing in a time that many other forms of communication are being blocked.
